7 ways to support your son joining a fraternity

  1. Open Communication

Maintain open and honest communication with your son about his decision to join a fraternity. Encourage him to share his thoughts, expectations, and any concerns he may have. This will help you understand his motivations and ensure you both are on the same page.

  2. Assist with Research

Conduct your own research about the fraternity your son is interested in joining. Learn about their values, history, activities, and reputation on campus. This will help you gain a better understanding of the organization and make informed decisions before rush and recruitment starts.

  3. Discuss Expectations and Boundaries

Have a conversation with your son about your expectations and boundaries. Talk about academics, responsibilities, time commitments, and how he plans to balance his fraternity involvement with his studies. It's essential to set clear expectations while still allowing him to make his own choices.

  4. Encourage Responsibility and Accountability

Emphasize the importance of responsible behavior and accountability. Discuss topics such as alcohol and substance use, peer pressure, hazing, and respectful treatment of others. Encourage your son to make smart decisions and be aware of the potential consequences of his actions.

  5. Educate yourself around Stereotypes

There are various common stereotypes that are associated with all fraternities, such as ‘heavy’ drinking, ‘wild’ partying, and overall rambunctiousness. However, it’s important to note that these stereotypes are harmful and no fraternity at Northeastern encourages these activities.

  6. Ask your son if the organization hosts any family-friendly events

During rush week, your son will be able to meet every fraternity during the IFC BBQ and IFC Info Session (check out the Rush Schedule for more details). During these events, your son will get the chance to ask many questions to various fraternity brothers. A good question for your son to ask is: “Does the fraternity hold any events that family can attend?”.

  7. Support Network

Encourage your son to build a strong support network within the fraternity. Motivate him to make connections with responsible, like-minded individuals who prioritize academics, personal growth, and community involvement. This network can provide a sense of belonging, guidance, and support throughout his fraternity experience.
